Fare Pricing & Zones

There are three fare zones for transit in Metro Vancouver — the number of boundaries you cross during your trip will determine your fare. SkyTrain covers all three zones, SeaBus zones one and two, and buses are one zone.

Monthly Passes provide unlimited travel on SkyTrain and SeaBus within the number of zones purchased, plus unlimited travel on buses at any time, and across all zones on all modes on weekends, statutory holidays, and after 6:30 p.m. on weekday evenings.

Passes are sold for 1-, 2-, or 3-Zone travel. Passes for West Coast Express must be purchased separately as they are priced differently.

Buying a Monthly Pass

To purchase a Monthly Pass, you need to have a Compass Card. Monthly Passes are transferrable and valid for the calendar month in which they are activated. Passes must be tapped before the 15th of the calendar month to be valid for the current month.

You can pre-purchase your next month's pass at a Compass Vending Machine, by phone, or in person starting on the 20th of each month until the 15th of the next. Visit our Where to Buy page for information on where to get a Compass Card.

You can purchase a Monthly Pass at any time online. Your credit card will be charged at the time of purchase, and passes are activated the first time you tap during the period for which your pass is valid.

Monthly Passes are not pro-rated for purchase at any point.

If you have a 1- or 2-Zone Monthly Pass on your Compass Card, but need to travel through extra zones on rail or SeaBus, just load Stored Value onto your Compass Card in advance of your trip and your upgrades will be seamless. Compass will deduct the correct amount for your trip when you tap out.

A DayPass provides unlimited transit use on all buses, SkyTrain and SeaBus for one day from the start of the first transit service to the end of the service day. You can use it for travel through all zones, and save money over buying single fares when you take multiple trips in the same day

Note: The Canada Line YVR AddFare is applied to single-trips departing Sea Island stations eastbound and continuing to Bridgeport Station and beyond.

There are two ways to purchase a DayPass:

  • Load a DayPass on your Compass Card

    • You can buy and load a DayPass onto your Compass Card online, by phone, in person at one of our two walk-in centres, or at any Compass Vending Machine.

    • DayPasses on a Compass Card will be activated first, over any Stored Value. So load a DayPass only if you intend to use it the next time you travel.

  • Buy a DayPass ticket

    • Compass DayPass Tickets can be purchased from a Compass Vending Machine (CVM). Please note these tickets expire at the end of service on the day they are purchased, even if unused.

    • You can also buy a Compass DayPass Ticket from any Compass Retailer. DayPasses purchased at a Compass Retailer expire 30 days from the date they’re purchased.

Low-income seniors and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) have access to the BC Bus Pass Program that is valid across TransLink's services. Visit the BC Government Bus Pass Program webpage for details on how to apply.

Concession fare eligibility

HandyCard holders, seniors 65 years and older and youth 14 to 18 years with valid photo identification proving age, and children 5 to 13 years. Children under 5 years ride free when accompanied by a passenger possessing Proof of Payment (maximum of 4 children per passenger).

Things to remember

  • Your fare is calculated from the time you tap at a card reader. Make note of the time you tap your card when starting your journey.

  • Always carry your proof of payment, and ID if travelling on a concession fare, when in a Fare Paid Zone.

Contactless Payments

Our card readers accept contactless American Express, Mastercard, and Visa credit cards and Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay.

You can tap a contactless American Express, Mastercard, or Visa credit card or mobile wallet on card readers to pay an adult, cash fare.

Tap your credit card or mobile device when transferring or exiting, with the exception of buses, which are tap in only.

Please note that only one card can be used per person and customers must carry their proof of payment (credit card) with them during their journey.

Card clash occurs when multiple payment methods are tapped on a card reader at the same time.

To avoid card clash, remove your contactless American Express, Mastercard, or Visa credit card from your wallet or phone case before tapping it on a card reader.

If paying with a mobile device, please ensure there are no contactless cards in your phone case when you tap on card readers.

Paying with a credit card or mobile device allows you to transfer seamlessly across the system. You'll have 90 minutes to make your final transfer on bus, SkyTrain, and SeaBus, and 120 minutes on West Coast Express.

Paying with a credit card or mobile device is ideal for people who don't have Compass Cards. Tapping with a credit card or mobile device allows you to pay right at the card readers without digging for change or lining up to purchase a ticket.

Compass Cards operate the same way, but they offer a discount over cash fares. More information about Compass can be found on our Compass Card page.

We're exploring this option for future updates to the system.

Not at this time, but we're exploring a number of options for the future.

Like many merchants who process payments through credit card networks, the Compass system speeds up transactions by pre-authorizing an amount and processing and reconciling the exact amount later. This means we can't display fares at tap out, as this would result in a significant delay at fare gates.

Please refer to your credit card statement.

You may see various notifications and pre-authorizations in your mobile app. The way these appear will depend on the app you're using and the card you have loaded to the phone. These notifications are not your charges. To see your charges, please refer to your credit card statement. For a successful tap, the card reader will display “Proceed” with a green check mark.

After you've completed your journey, the exact fare will be sent to your credit card company.

To see your final charges, please refer to your credit card statement.

Please refer to your credit card statement to review your charges. If you have unexpected charges, please call Compass Customer Service for assistance at 604.398.2042.

No problem. Just like with a Compass Card, you can undo your journey. If you tapped on a bus, please ask the driver to reverse the tap for you. If travelling on rail, you can undo your initial tap in by tapping out of the same station within 21 minutes on SkyTrain and SeaBus, and 60 minutes for West Coast Express.

TransLink takes the protection of personal information very seriously and takes the following steps to ensure customer privacy is protected:

  • All credit card data is encrypted within our system and the payment network.

  • When a customer taps with a credit card or mobile payment method, the system generates a token as a proxy for the credit card number and tracks the activity of the token, not the credit card number, in order to calculate the fare.

  • Storage and retrieval of data for customer service queries is in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations, and payment-card industry standards.

Transit Police and Transit Security use Hand-Held Units (HHUs) to check fares.

If you've paid with a credit card or mobile device, police or security personnel may use an HHU to detect if your credit card or mobile device is an accepted form of payment and has been tapped into the system.

You don't need to touch the card reader with your contactless credit card or device, but you can hold it within 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2 inches) for it to be read.

Some contactless credit cards and devices have a greater range and may be able to interact with the card reader from a greater distance.

Compass Card

Compass Cards are available for Adult and Concession Fares and can be loaded with Monthly Passes, DayPasses, and Stored Value.

Compass Ticket

Tickets are only sold from a Compass Vending Machine. Customers can transfer across all modes of transit with a ticket for 90 minutes.

A DayPass provides unlimited transit use on all buses, SkyTrain and SeaBus for one day from the start of the first transit service to the end of the service day.

You can use a DayPass for travel through all zones, and save money over buying single fares when you take multiple trips in the same day.

Stored Value

Using Stored Value on your Compass Card is just like adding cash to your card, so you can pay-as-you-go. Stored Value offers flexibility since you don’t need to specify a zone or zones in advance.
